UPC-A is a retail barcode format that represents a 12-digit number, including its final check digit. In the GS1 system that product identifier is a GTIN-12.

Use a number assigned for the product you are labeling. A generator can draw its barcode; it cannot make up a valid retail allocation on your behalf.

Enter the number without losing digits

Keep every leading zero. Do not treat a UPC as an ordinary spreadsheet number that can be shortened or displayed in scientific notation. The complete UPC-A value has 12 digits, not 12 characters plus a check digit.

Check-digit checklist (UPC-A)

  • Supply the full 12-digit value including the check digit, or follow the field’s stated completion mode.
  • Weights alternate 3 and 1 from the rightmost of the first 11 digits.
  • check digit = (10 − (weighted sum mod 10)) mod 10
  • A matching check digit is arithmetic only — not proof of ownership or retail acceptance.

UPC versus EAN: the important distinction

Item UPC-A EAN-13
Complete digit count 12 13
GS1 identifier commonly represented GTIN-12 GTIN-13
Includes a final check digit Yes Yes

A GTIN-12 can be represented in a 13-digit form by adding a leading zero. That does not assign a different product. Do not remove a nonzero leading digit from an EAN-13 number to force it into UPC-A. Use the EAN generator when that is the required format.

Number assignment is separate from image generation

Does this give me a GS1-owned UPC number?

No. This generator does not give you a GS1-owned UPC number. A real new retail UPC/EAN identifier must come from GS1; the barcode image merely represents it. GS1 licenses identifiers or company prefixes under its rules. If the product already has an assigned identifier, use that one with the brand owner's authorization.

Retailers may check the product record as well as the barcode. A scannable image or valid check digit does not guarantee acceptance by a marketplace or shop.
